For those interested in history Evora is a delight. The Roman Temple of Diana is well worth a visit as is the town museum. Lots of fascinating churches to visit. The Alentejo is renowned for its food and wine and Evora has plenty of excellent venues where you can enjoy both.
Evora used to be a quiet historic town - it is now too full of tourists and gift shops to be pleasurable to us. There are many other historic small towns in the Alentejo that are worth the visit, without the crowds.
I have worked in Evora many times over the years, leading specialised Art Historical tours. Every time I go they have improved something. It is a lovely city with much of interest to see and makes a good base for exploring other parts of the Alentejo
Nothing particularly interesting about this midsize town, a nice plaza with a couple of decent restaurants. It can be a good intermediate stop on the way from Lisbon to the Algarve (or Alentejo).
A quiet, relaxing space to stay in that area. It is just outside the village so the only walks available are to the nature (within the property or in its outskirts), which are beautiful with river, rice fields, some forest and cattle areas. The hotel is clean and basic, with large rooms and bathrooms but no interesting real views from the rooms. Parking is easy and just at the door and staff is really helpful to find solutions for your activities or needs in the region (from restaurants to gas stations, pharmacy or interesting places to visit). The breakfast is also basic but with some good local products (namely the bread and jams, but not the juices or the ham/cheese, which is a pity). Price seemed too expensive for the type of place ... but this is high season and this area gets lots of visitants and has limited offer. Álcacer is a small but interesting town with several medieval buildings and the countryside landscape is beautiful with rice fields and forest, and of course you have several excellent beaches nearby in Tróia pensinsula, Comporta, Carvalhal, pego, etc. Finally, food is almost perfect as you can get from traditional Alentejo meat (pork) dishes to all types of sea/river fish for a fraction of the price in Lisbon and almost fresh from the water.
This amazing little castle village is the best two day location mini vacation. The best: if it is too hot, there s Barragem do Alqueva with a full renovated official beach that will just help you melt the heat. Amazing, views - staying inside the castle is recommended to wake up to the tipical Alentejo plains (just leave your car outside the walls since it's forbidden to go around with the car from 10-18h).
If you are in Lisbon or around Portugal and you like to visit a quiet and interesting town, Evora is a good one for a day or two, more if you like discovering the Alentejo Region. It's quite expensive as it's a very attractive tourist destination, but I would say it's worth the pennies. Eating wise you can spend very few money and really enjoy good food, especially in the little local restaurant that are not so attractive from outside but they're super tasty and welcoming, very authentic and not pretentious. The Cathedral and the Evora Museum deserve a visit, very well kept and organised for visitors. The town itself it's worth a visit, lots of local products (maybe cheaper elsewhere in Portugal) and history to feel. It was a last minute choice going to visit it and I'm really glad I decided to. We've been visiting at the beginning of spring, so there were not too many tourists around and the weather was warm, not everything was open during the week, though.
Amazing place, with beautiful beaches and an authentic and preserved coastline. The littoral of Alentejo deserves to be seen for its authenticity and the nature, by hoping it will continue to be that way. The Duna Parque Beach Club is a wonderful place to stay, with friendly staff and, for those who do not especially want to go to the restaurant all the time, it is a perfect place with comfortable flats.
Evora is an enchanted little city in the heart of Alentejo. It has everything you could ask for: historic monuments, charming restaurants ( Origens was my favourite), high street clothing shops, and friendly hairdressers. Combine all this with the fact that within 5 minutes of the city, you are in the beautiful Alentejo countryside.
The typical landscape of Alentejo, a quiet place with a mining museum and handicraft atelier. You can walk or lie in the sun and listen to the birds.
Castro Verde
Delightful little boutique hotel in the charming village of Casével near the Alentejo town of Castro Verde. The service from the family that run the hotel is fantastic. We had a lovely, spacious room with very good wifi. The hotel is spotless and beautifully refurbished in a modern rustic style. There is a small swimming pool in the central patio and a terrace overlooking the rolling countryside. We were served an excellent dinner for a great price. The town is quiet and beautifully preserved. Another boutique gem in Portugal.
Ferreira do Alentejo
Beautiful property, located right by Ferreira do Alentejo, which itself is a lovely village to spend a few days in. The host was very welcoming and prepared a delicious breakfast selection for us. The bedroom was clean, private and comfortable. The fridge for guests was great to have, since we were on the road and had some veggies and beer with us. We were also allowed to bring our little dog in, which incredibly is not commonplace in a lot of rural stays in Portugal, so we’re most thankful for that!
Vimieiro
I recently had the pleasure of staying in a lovely accommodation in Alentejo, Portugal for a week-end. The decor was absolutely stunning with a rustic charm that made me feel right at home. The pool was situated in a beautiful setting with lounging areas to relax and take in the amazing views. The host, Marta was top-notch always willing to ensure my stay was comfortable and enjoyable. I would highly recommend this accommodation to anyone looking to experience the beauty of Alentejo, Portugal.
Marvão
Marvao is a great town to visit - just stunning. In the middle of it is Varanda do Alentejo. A small family run hotel, with great rooms, great staff, and a really great restaurant. I think the best meal we have ever had in Portugal. The steak and chestnuts was amazing. The owner is around every hour of the day to check everthing is perfect. The staff are so friendly and helpful. Upon arival, we checked in, and then had a beer out on the terrace, with one of the best views in all of Portugal.
Évora Monte
Views are outstanding, central location to everything the Alentejo region has to offer.. The “Place” is spotless! The hosts go above and beyond to make you feel welcome…we travel a lot, but Vicki and Mitch are exceptional in this regard. You can sense that they love what they do and want to share their special “Place” with you. If you’re looking for a great place to stay in Portugal, to roam around, explore and find adventure off the beaten path… Look no further, you have found “The Place”!
The Hotel is centrally located inside the historic walls of the village within easy walking distance to the castle and all along the ramparts which offer amazing views. Plentiful free parking was available next to the property. Breakfast had a lot of variety and staff was able to accommodate us with GF bread and recommended the very good Varanda do Alentejo restaurant for supper. The town has a high end feel to it with all the buildings nicely renovated while keeping their historic charm.
My train got cancel due to strike, contacted the hotel and they were able to arrange a transfer from Lisboa on short notice, I am impressed by the crew’s efficiency. The room is well furnished, everything that I need is available. Cookies offered with the turndown service is delicious, do not miss it. Quality of food and service at the restaurant is fantastic, especially the scrambled eggs with Alentejo sausage. The hotel has a wide range of activities, from complimentary to paid.
Comporta
adorable boutique hotel ran by Charly and Lou. The facilities are comfy, stylish and maintain the Alentejo charm with sophistication. The beds were extremely comfy. I loved the shower and pool outside. While I didn't use the pool, I did use the space outside to exercise before hitting the beach. It was a perfect place to stay alone and for a group. I was traveling alone and it was a perfect stay for a few days.
Zambujeira do Mar
An exceptional countryside hotel in a beautiful location, close to the sea. Our room was in a typical Alentejo cottage situated a short distance from the main building. It included a convenient kitchenette. Well decorated and very clean. The service was very good indeed. Very tasty, generous-sized and reasonably priced meals of fine local Alentejo food were served in the restaurant. Breakfasts were good.
What a quaint elegant chique country farm. Everything was spot on, the decoration was effortlessly elegant, restoring and bringing to life what seemed to be horse barns and stalls, done in such good taste and attention to detail. Bravo for bringing a little touch of French savoire fair into the beautiful countryside of Alentejo in Portugal. An amazing backdrop for this little gem. Definitely coming back
Elvas
we stayed 5 nights in the apt and we based at this place to disciver Elvas some lovely villages in the Alto Alentejo. thus is a gorgeous place, very nicely renovated, lovely spacious apt, well-runned accommodation, amazing people/staff, fresh home made breakfast. small (8 rooms and 1 apt with 2 rooms) peaceful hotel, a lovely garden with a pool, honesty bar… so many positives reasons to stay here.
Arriving to the Hotel was very easy. We traveled by car, and had no issues finding the location. There is also a lot of parking space withing the hotel premises. The staff was great, giving us a very warm welcome and very fast check in process. The room was pleasant, clean and quiet, with a great balcony over the peaceful Alentejo landscape. I didn't use the pool, but it looked great too.
We had breakfeast and dinner at the hotel and both were amazing. The breakfeast had a good variety of things and was excelent, the bread from Alentejo truly is something! At dinner we tried the chicken in moscatel and it was beyond amazing! I totally recommend the chicken with moscatel! The lamb was also very good. The desserts were also amazing
Casa Branca
First of all the staff was extremely kind and polite, they do the atmost to let you feel welcome. Everyone with a smile! The Hotel is beautifully furnished, very stylish. Everything is spotless clean and well taken care of. We can recommend the Hotel to everyone who is searching for great time off in the Alentejo.
Juromenha
The apartment was big, very clean, well decorated. We could not enjoy the garden, bbq and swimming poor because of the weather but the facilities are great. The owners are so nice and they own the next door restaurant with the best traditional Portuguese food we had during our whole week stay in Alentejo.
Redondo
Quiet property in a convenient location for visiting Alentejo. The hosts are very welcoming and gracious. The pool and activities would make it a good choice for families with children. They provided us with two fans which were much appreciated in the heat since there is no air conditioning.
Hotel was great and the food in the restaurant marvelous. Very delicious and typical from that region, Alentejo. Small pool yet very good. Good size for the number of rooms in the hotel. Comfortable bedroom and hotel common rooms. Will mark it as a regular 2 or 3 day yearly stays.
I was liked my stay at the hotel! The cleanliness, the secluded location with a stunning view of the typical Alentejo landscape, and, in particular, the warmth and courtesy of the staff were absolutely remarkable. The common area of reception and restaurant was equally impressive.
Almodôvar
A lovely small Hotel, very clean and well mantained. The owners are such nice people, they upgraded our room and showed us the main things to do, locally. Breakfast is nicer than we would expect. Almodovar is a calm and traditional Alentejo small town for a overnight.
What an incredible experience we had staying at Hotel Santa Clara. We were on a cycling trip and the hotel staff walked that extra mile to accommodate us. Tania and Mara were incredible hosts. We are going to spread the word far. A hidden gem in the Alentejo.
