Let me start with the staff: they were not very friendly and need customer service training. The ceiling board was leaking, and we had to change rooms. There was no bathroom mat, and the rooms were small. Serious renovations are needed. The TV and air conditioning weren't working, and the Wi-Fi password was also not working .

We visited some exquisite restaurants, from Jack Salmons in La Lucia to Goundens curry place in Umbilo road. Both, highly recommended. We also tried Mali's Restaurant in Windermere too.
For the most part, self catering options allowed us to explore the fresh, readily available fantastic range of unusual local vegetables, produce and quality meats that are extremely economical in pricing compared to Joburg and Cape Town.
There are so many hidden gems if you know where to look.🥳
On the other hand, Town is a disappointment and online advertising of specials and places to see, is limited. Unless you know locals, you end up going to only what the Tourism Board advertises and in reality, some of the places are run down, badly managed, or derelict.
The beaches are not what they used to be. I am originally from Durban and I was heartsore to see how badly managed it is. There are great improvements and construction going on for the roads, but the heavy congestion and re-routing prevents you from exploring many areas of interest. The Workshop - which was a famous mall, is now an unkempt eye sore. Sad how many beautiful buildings and businesses have been destroyed through lack of respect and maintenance.
As we drove through town, it was sad 😔 There is little respect for rules of the road and you need to be extra vigilant, as cars keep driving through red robots without consideration for other vehicles. I would highly recommend being extra careful. 🙏🏼
Durban is the one city in SA, that has the most potential, Beautiful weather, amazing history, great museums and wonderful cultures. It is doing them a disservice, by not giving local businesses the boost they need.
No one wants to spend a holiday in a fancy mall. They would do brilliantly, if they allowed all people, of all cultures to contribute meaningfully to the development of this once beautiful city.❤️

Short of basic essentials, one towel per person over 2 days
This hostel deserves better reviews! The location is perfect and centrally located near the major bus terminals. It's 750m to North Beach. The showers were hot and working properly. The security inside the hostel is okay. My favorite person remains Joyce, the manager. She is exceptional in taking in all requests and even making sure guests are safe by giving good safety advice. I would recommend this to all travellers looking for a hostel in Durban.
The hotel has a central location close to Florida Road, the heart of the Durban nightlife.
The room had a kettle and a fridge. A microwave is available in the common area. If you need an iron and an iron board, you can request from reception.
We had bottled water.
The room was equipped with aircon.
We stayed for two nights and our room was cleaned nicely after night 1.
Tariman boutique hotel was a great host for me and 6 friends as we were in Durban for the football weekend. We were very comfortable in our rooms. The staff went an extra mile in assisting us to get to a few places and ensuring that we have as much fun as possible. Its a great place to stay with a group. The accomodation is central to everything.
I liked everything, the location, parking, bed was comfortable, room was spaceous with airconditioner, Television with many channels. Clean towels and a big shower with hot water. We really enjoyed our stay. We will definately book at Bayside hotel and self catering when we visit Durban again. Thanks to Booking. Com
Really love the central location of the premises, Gateway is across the road, numerous restaurants to enjoy, for myself the bathroom is the one of the most important rooms (Spacious, Clean, Comfortable)
The room felt nostalgic to older resorts down the south coast, felt very comfortable.
Great location near the beach. Well furnished, with comfy beds and couches. Unit had everything we needed. Air conditioners worked great which is a great extra for the Durban heat. The domestic worker was also friendly and efficient.
The location was absolutely amazing, we could not have gotten better for what we were looking for for our time in Umhlanga - all of the restaurants/bars/shops all walking distance. The aircon worked amazingly in the Durban humidity.
The beds are comfortable, perfect location not far from the Umhlanga hype, near the beach. Breakfast buffet had nice varieties to choose from. The rooms are cleaned daily, we really enjoyed our stay.
I like the location of the hotel. It is near the beachfront and is within walking distance of many amenities. There was no need to hire a vehicle or get an uber to get around
Everything the hospitality, the location is near the beach and restaurants, the room was nice and big and comfortable, the breakfast was just a cherry on top
