We stayed in the superior twin room, which was really spacious and even came with a washing machine and miniature kitchen. The restaurant is inside a former bank. The restrooms are behind the former safe door.

Matsumoto castle was lovely to see at night. The Yayoi Kusama exhibition at the Matsumoto City Museum of Art is permanent and the outside is gorgeous but the exhibit itself was disappointingly small compared to the one in Tokyo. My favourite is the temporary exhibit of the artworks of Yasuka Sudou, an artist who died young of cancer at the age of 30. Her works interplay light and darkness and are technically impressive and emotionally touching.

We stayed at Hotel Kagetsu which is just a few minutes walk from the castle. The castle is def worth a visit. If you go to the top there are very steep stairs. We ate at two local restaurants. I can recommend the tiny tonkatsu restaurant which is just 50m down the road from the hotel. A taxi from the station takes 10 mins and costs 1000 yen.

The castle is beautiful, the local shopping streets are lovely and had variety. The Matsumoto City Museum of Art is fantastic for Yayoi Kusama lovers.
A nice quiet city after the throng of Tokyo, slower paced.

Good place to stay for access to the mountains.
Good place to stay for access to the mountains. The town is small but has good facilities including some big shops. There are a few restaurants but many close early and some are not easily accessible for people who don’t speak Japanese

A city to stay in for day trips!
A city to stay in for day trips! Matsumoto is welcoming and kind. Not too much to do in the city itself (I think one day is enough). we were in Matsumoto for 3 nights, on the first day came from Alpine route, on the second day we went to Kamikochi, on the third day to Kiso Valley. the 4th day was super rainy - was good for a museum + shopping mall + movie + massage. Enjoy!

Matsumoto is a mid-size city with several attractions, with its castle being the most famous. Areas around the castle are great for walking, while a bit further away are several parks that offer nice walks and views of the city and surrounding mountains. There are several areas with restaurants and cafes that are lively in the evening, including near the main train station. If you have a car, places to visit near the city include the Venus Line, a popular mountain drive offering fantastic vistas when the weather is good, and Kamikochi with its beautiful view of Japan's Alps, as well as historic small towns such as Narai-juki and Hida Takayama.
Best bunk beds, matresses and (supersoft) bedsheets I've had during my entire stay in Japan. Very comfortable, large beds and the indoor air climate of the dorms is well controlled. Bathrooms are clean and common kitchen is well equipped. Location is perfect, close to main attractions and still only 15 mins walking from the train station (but Matsumoto is not that big anyway). The street is a pedestrian little shopping street, so very quiet at night as well. I loved my stay and would recommend this hostel to anyone going to Matsumoto.
It’s only about a year old so it’s very new and clean. The whole hotel is tatami floored and once you enter into hotel, you have to remove shoes, put into the shoe lockers as no shoes is allowed throughout the hotel. Very nice experience actually. As with all Dormy Inn, there’s complimentary ramen, probiotic drink, ice cream, beverages for guests at certain timing. There’s also a laundry room. Look for the Castle East Exit and head in that direction. It’s about 600m away from Matsumoto Station.
This is a very cosy small hostel located 20 min walk and 10 min bus ride from Matsumoto station. Matsumoto castle is a 5-10 min walk and there are many restaurants in the area. It is especially suitable for people who like to cook themselves. The kitchen is very clean and well-stocked with even a little toaster oven. The staff is super friendly and helped us call car rentals and restaurants when not speaking Japanese was an issue
The owners where incredibly nice and welcoming, the service was exceptional and made our stay very comfortable.
Breakfast was great (You can choose between Japanese or Western style breakfast).
Great location in Matsumoto with free rental bikes for the hotell guests, and parking if you come by car as we did.
The owner also sells locally produced honey, which tasted amazing when we tried it when we arrived back home.
The hotel is a typical Japanese business hotel. Rather small rooms but clean and comfy. It is about a 10 minute walk from the train station (turn left after exiting and follow main road until reaching the hotel on left). Although a bit of a walk from the train station, Matsumoto castle is just a very short walk away.
Breakfast was a simple, western style buffet with some rolls, coffee, and soup.
Matsumoto is not a large town so the hotel was within walking distance of most places. The castle is literally around the corner and is a fascinating place to visit. Breakfast was good. The stay was very good value for money. The twin room was very spacious (it may have been an upgrade). Fresh towels were provided every day.
The staff bent over forwards to help us and understand our few words of Japanese, very welcoming. Comfy tatami room, nice onsen, little village on edge of Matsumoto town with some evening food options but no breakfast options. But that was okay because we'd brought food and there was coffee and tea at the hotel.
Well located just 10 minutes from the train station and 20 minutes from Matsumoto Castle. Lovely western-style hotel with all the amenities (except no public baths). Excellent and friendly staff, good buffet breakfast in the cafe.
It is a small hotel with just a few rooms. Excellent location between the train station and the castle. The room is big, and we enjoyed the common room where you can get coffee, hot water and meet other travelers if you wish.
3-5 minutes walk from the station. 12 to 15 minutes walk to Matsumoto Station. Hotel staffs are very friendly.
Complimentary breakfast and in the evening drinks like booze, soda and juices are available in the lobby.
This hotel with friendly staff offers clean (bath)rooms, good beds and a tasty, extensive breakfast buffet. It's located close to Matsumoto train station and thus a good starting point to explore to region.
The hotel is only a 2-3 minute walk from Matsumoto Station. There are many convenience stores and restaurants in the area. The breakfast was nice and the staff was kind.
The hotel is located close to the castle and a 12 minutes walk from Matsumoto station. The staff was friendly. Beds were comfortable but the pillows are way too high
The room was clean and very quiet at night. The location of the hotel was quite convenient, being a short walk from both Matsumoto Station and Matsumoto Castle.
