Located in Heraklio Town, 200 metres from Heraklion Archaeological Museum, the family-run Infinity City Boutique Hotel features air-conditioned rooms with free WiFi throughout the property.

Parts of the breakfast were perfect; the fried egg in olive oil with spring onion and the scrambled eggs were rather like a home-cooked fair, simple, but unusually good. The view from the replacement room we were (601) given was superb, with a lovely private sun-trap balcony overlooking the port. It was a large, well-appointed room. A good bottle of wine with a fruit salad and a thank you note were presented at the end, which was appreciated and a nice touch.

FAQs about hotels in Heraklio Town

The Cradle of Minoan Civilisation

Nowadays known as the capital of the Greek island of Crete, Heraklion was once the centre of the Minoan civilisation and the port of the ancient Knossos. This stunning gem features rich history, outdoor markets and important archaeological sites.

Just 6 km from the lively Heraklion is the world-renown ruins of the Knossos palace, where according to the Greek mythology Daedalus built a labyrinth to hold the Minotaur.

Home to the 16th-century church of Agia Ekaterini, the cathedral of St. Minas, Venetian Loggia and the Archaeological Museum, this destination is much more than just a cosmopolitan city with vibrant nightlife. Do not forget to wander around the old port or visit the Venetian Walls.

Beach lovers can discover some of the most popular places of Crete like the tourist resorts of Malia and Hersonissos, the golden beach of Amoudara and the fishing village of Agia Pelagia.

The international airport of Heraklion, Nikos Kazantzakis, is the largest one in the island and the second busiest in Greece. Situated about 4 km from the city centre, it offers seasonal flights to Vienna, Barcelona, Zurich and St. Petersburg. Booking.com offers a great variety of hotels in Heraklion.

This is good for a weekend trip, but if you are staying longer hire a car and tour, landing here and returning via Chana. We took out the extra insurance via Booking.com, very wise because the vehicle was hit by a driver while parked, who drove off. Due to the state of the roads and the increased traffic this is common, there was another couple in the hire office that had also been hit while parked. Standards of driving in Greece are poor. Booking.com paid out within 24 hours of the claim. This was a return visit to Crete after 20 years. The nation is in steep decline with appalling infrastructure and an unhappy population. We will not return.

Heraklion is now the main city of Crete, where years ago it was Chania. Over recent years the central area has been upgraded with paved walking to the shops and square. If you look upwards you can still see the signs of previous Venetian times and around old constructions. There is a street market area now selling the usual tourist pieces, which has changed from a market that had fruit, vegetables, fish etc. The side streets still have the small restaurants of old. As you walk down towards the harbour area you should visit Ligo Krasi, Ligo Thalassa as their food is superb traditional Cretan and used by locals. The harbour area is good to walk along and watch the cruise ships and ferries. Ferries leave from Heraklion daily to local islands such as Santorini and provide an excellent service. The modernised bus station just 15 minutes from centre will allow you to move to all areas of Crete on clean efficient buses. Heraklion can get very busy during the weekend or bank holiday times, when locals visit and sit around the square in the cafes and small bars, providing a great atmosphere.

Heraklio is a great place to visit!.

Heraklio is a great place to visit!. We stayed for over a month and were never bored. There is a very extensive pedestrian area with a huge variety of shops, places of cultural interest, restaurants and snack bars. The local cuisine is reasonably priced. The city is very busy with locals and tourists mixing in the pedestrian areas. Heraklio is a great base for visiting the rest of the island as most of the major urban areas are also on the north coast. There are very efficient local and regional bus services and of course car and moped hire. For those interested in history and culture Heraklio is the place to visit. I do recommend reading up on the incredible history of the island before visiting as this will help the visitor better understand the context of what they are visiting. We visited in March to April and combined a city holiday with a beach holiday. There are two very long beaches very near the city centre. Almost everyone we met spoke very good English so we never really got to use any of the little Greek we learned before travelling. In one month we never used any cash as all business take electronic payment per mobile phone, credit cards etc.

Liked the fact there were lots of places to visit in the town. It’s a mix of old and new and full of places to eat. Bus service is good and not expensive but taxis are expensive to visit around the island. People are friendly and most are able to speak some English but be aware all signs are in Greek so when trying to find your way walking it can be a bit confusing if you don’t speak the language. But that’s part of the fun of the holiday.

Seeing the Palace of Knossos and then the Archeology Museum was a highlight! So much history and so interesting. This is where the Minotaur lived and the site of the Labyrinth, as well as the pre-Greek ancient Minoans. On top of this, inside the Venetian walls are a maze of fun streets with shops and restaurants, all walkable. Good food and fun. So very much worth going to Heraklion! Plus an easy peasy airport is very close nearby.

I stayed in about 100 hotels on this last trip and El Greko was one of the best. The price was terrific considering they are right bang in the middle of the walking street. How can you ask for a better location? Best in the city. The staff and front desk were very friendly, the breakfast was included and decent. The actual room was excellent when compared to the price I was charged - Crete in the middle of summer. I have a balcony overlooking the walking street. I would sit there and watch people passing by. Perfect.

great location! Walkable from ferry port for most, though definitely have wheeled luggage. It's not far away, but a healthy 15 minute walk. Really enjoyed the morning view of the ferry/container port. Crete mountains as a backdrop as well and a small island off the coast. Friendly staff and a simple, but quality breakfast. Really enjoyed the balcony! The room is simple, but very spacious. The balcony and grand view make it even larger!

It’s been a long time, and through several continents of traveling, that we finally, and fortunately, discovered this impeccable site to stay and visit Crete. I know these words seem overwhelming, but just read the backups. We do not have any words for criticism. Yes, the word we chose for City Lion is “impeccable.” Thank you Chris, Effie, and Monos for our dream accommodation. —-Gordon and Françoise

It is a warm local hotel, quite near the beautiful Venetian Port and the animated 25 August avenue (I could stroll along this avenue everyday without getting bored! ). The receptionist people are the nicest. They have saved me from a taxi situation at 4am, without them it would be very difficult to get a taxi in Crete at that hour.

The breakfast buffet was incredible! The best I’ve had in Crete! The staff were very accommodating and helpful. Our room had a very nice view.
